DFW Airport Media Statement: Winter Storm Warning Sunday, February 22, 2015, 4:00PM CST

DFW Airport is fully underway with preparations for a winter weather event expected to begin this evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for DFW Airport effective at 6:00PM tonight. The forecast calls for freezing rain and sleet in the evening hours of Sunday and into Monday morning, with accumulations expected. Current conditions at DFW Airport include intermittent rain with temperatures in the upper 30’s, but the thermometer is expected to dip below freezing after midnight.

DFW has already begun taking advance steps to mitigate the impact of the expected winter weather system. Airport crews pretreated elevated surfaces and the airfield runways and taxiways on Saturday night, and crews are pretreating vehicle roadways on the Airport tonight. DFW advises motorists making their way to the Airport to exercise caution as they drive, and to watch for traffic control officers and possible detours within the Airport.

The Airport has its aircraft de-icing facilities in a state of readiness, but there are no de-icing operations occurring at this hour. DFW Airfield Operations crews are monitoring the runways, ramps and taxiways on the airfield.

As of this evening, airlines serving DFW have cancelled about 160 flights scheduled for Sunday, primarily evening arrivals. As of today, airlines have also proactively cancelled about half of the flights scheduled into and out of DFW for Monday, February 23, in anticipation of the predicted ice and sleet.

DFW Airport advises all customers with flights or anyone driving to DFW to meet flights to stay updated with the latest flight information. Customers can check the Flight Information page at www.dfwairport.com/flights or download the Official DFW Airport Mobile App for information about flights within the next 8 hours. The DFW mobile app offers live real-time updates to track late changes to flight status or gate information.

Inside the Airport terminals, DFW Customer Service teams are monitoring checkpoints and Customs as well as passenger activity, and will provide assistance as needed.

DFW Public Affairs will provide further updates as necessary.
